Ainsley’s Angels of America is a national non-profit organization that provides opportunities for those with disabilities to participate in endurance events.
Angel Athlete Riders
These athletes “Roll With the Wind” in life and in endurance events…our inspiration and our purpose. Anyone with a disAbility that prevents them from racing on their own may participate as an Angel Athlete-rider. Like all of our Angels, there is no fee to register to become an Angel Athlete-rider. On race day, we fit each rider for a chair to use during the event and pair them with an Angel Runner (unless the rider has a specific runner request).
These athletes have the honor of pushing or being pulled by our Angel Athlete-riders. New Angel Runners are placed with an experienced and similar-paced Angel Runner for their first few races. This ensures the safety of the Athlete-riders and gives the Angel Runner an opportunity to become familiar with the equipment.
The glue that holds our family together, Guardian Angels assist all Angels and Ambassadors in accomplishing the mission!
Ainsley’s Angels of the Triad
We have a local chapter of Ainsley’s Angels here in the Triad. Ainsley’s Angel’s takes special needs kids and adults and bring racing wheelchairs on race day and pair them with able-bodied runners to complete various endurance events throughout the Triad. They service Greensboro, Winston Salem, High Point, Lexington, and Salisbury.
Everything is free for the riders – always! Ainsley’s Angels provides all the equipment. The chairs offer storage for oxygen tanks and can hold up to 300 pounds. They have positioning pillows available for those who need it. On race day they have anywhere from 3 to 10 volunteers helping things go smoothly. They can service just about any need an individual might have. Just arrive early and they can get you all settled!
Ainsley’s Angels is in need of Athlete-runners as well as volunteers. They have this to say about their existing runners and volunteers:
“Our runners lend their legs. We have all kinds of runners from those who just want to give back to OT, PT, nurses, doctors, teachers, and those with just pure heart!”
